11 May Luncheon at the Oregon Military Museum, Camp Withycombe — RSVP REQUESTED

Planning on people showing up at 11am (ie doors open), but lunch/sandwiches won’t be there until 11:30ish. Once I have numbers, I will do some fine turning with times, groups, tours, etc. More to follow

WPS-OR Members,

Please RSVP if you will be attending our casual luncheon (most likely catered sandwiches to make it easy on ourselves) on Saturday May 11th at Camp Withycombe (ie Clakamas) in the Armed Forces Reserve Center (AFRC). I’ll need numbers for meal planning purposes and to organize folks into small groups for the tours of the works-in-progress Oregon Military Museum.

Our host, the Oregon Military Museum staff, will be taking small groups through the facilities for behind-the-scenes tours to see the transformation, vision and share some of the collection. Our group can corral in the AFRC and view the superb displays in that building while waiting to be escorted through the museum. See attached brochure for additional background.

The grounds are also open to explore. Kids/families are welcome on Camp Withycombe and the AFRC, but I imagine they will be frowned upon in the museum for the small group tours. Please plan accordingly.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, concerns, etc.

Regards,
Nate Sandvig

Hope you guys are doing well. We are kicking butt over here. Even with the drawndown and not the usual miltiary action taking place, my Soldiers have found other avenues to succeed, you guys would be proud!

2013 WPS-OR Founders Day: March 23rd

220px-U.S._Military_Academy_COAThe West Point Society of Oregon is pleased to invite you and your spouse or guest to the 2013 Founders Day Dinner.  Our special guest and keynote speaker will be Major General Raymond F. Rees ’66, The Adjutant General for the State of Oregon.  Retiring this summer, MG Rees will share his unique perspectives of 51 years in uniform, from West Point through a storied career with the US Army and the National Guard Bureau.

Following tradition, the Society will host new cadet candidates as our special guests.  A pre-briefing for candidates and their parents will precede the social hour and dinner, to provide further insight to the Academy and to cadet development.  This provides an opportunity for these young people and their parents to learn more about West Point and to share in some of the special camaraderie deriving from our gathering.
5:30 pm — Candidate Briefing
6:30 pm — Social Hour
7:30 pm — Dinner

Attire for the dinner will be dress blues, or coat and tie, and appropriate ladies attire.  For newcomers, the MAC facility has a large parking garage across Salmon Street that is open to guests.

The linked return form can be completed and submitted as your RSVP.  There is $20 in annual dues for regular members of the Society.  This money is used for the candidates’ dinners and related costs, Society guest speakers, and for printing, mailing and miscellaneous administrative costs.

Please return the enclosed reservation to Rick Goodell ’68, as noted on the form, with the required information and your check payable to “West Point Society of Oregon” for the dinner and/or dues.  Your response is requested by March 12th.  Please join us as we dine and celebrate our common bond on West Point’s 211th birthday!

February Luncheon: Krista Swan, Senior Public Affairs Specialist at Oregon Zoo

11979154-largekrista nilda avatarPlease join us on February 20th as we welcome Senior Public Affairs Specialist at Oregon Zoo.  Krista will share some of the exciting events going on at the Oregon Zoo from last month’s City-approved plan for improvements to be made across the zoo site over the next decade to the arrival of their 350# infant sensation, Lily.

Krista Swan has been proud to work at Oregon Zoo since 1999. She manages public events and marketing activities, from booking entertainment for “Sunset at the Zoo” and ZooLights, to placing billboards and coordinating advertising. Exhibit openings are her favorite activity to coordinate, as the excitement of new animals can’t be beat. Her favorite animal is the Amur tiger, although elephants are a close second.

This will surely be a great luncheon, so please join us on the 20th of February

January Luncheon – Mick Hoban

Hoban with Ball vs Vancouver Whitecaps at Civic StadiumJoin us on January 16th for the first luncheon of 2013.  It will be a wonderfully Portland event as we host Mick Hoban.  As the first signed member of the Portland Timbers, Mr. Hoban will surely delight us with tales of the team, and of his deep roots in Oregon.

About our guest speaker

MICK HOBAN played four seasons with the NASL Portland Timbers (1975-78) and was the first contracted player in Timbers history. He also served as the club’s community relations manager. Hoban began his career as a defender with Aston Villa in 1970 and played eight seasons in the NASL for Atlanta, Denver and the Timbers. In 1973, Hoban gained his lone cap for the USMNT. After retiring in 1978, Hoban was hired by Blue Ribbon Sports, and started Nike soccer business. Hoban was the VP of Soccer Promotions at Umbro USA from 1988-95, and in 2000 helped form soccer consulting firm Soccer Solutions, LLC, with former Bayern Munich, Inter Milan star, and current US Men’s National Team coach Juergen Klinsmann. Hoban now runs his own independent soccer marketing firm. He has also coached at the club level (Lake Oswego), as a member of the OYSA staff and served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Portland. Throughout his career, Hoban has been strongly involved with volunteerism, lending his efforts to Special Olympics Oregon, the Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon, Dynasty House, Harper’s Playground, and the NSCAA. Mick and his wife, Linda, have two children and reside in Portland.

We’re Back!

After losing our site several months ago for reasons unknown (no excuse, sir!), we are back. Over the next few days, we’ll be working on getting everything back to STRAC.

If you have questions/comments, you can send an email to info@wpsor.org

Thank you for your patience.
