Mental health care is an important priority of the Military Health System. Education about mental illness and available mental health services to service members and their families is important. Although Congress established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week, TRICARE encourages awareness all year long.

Veterans Day events with Returning Veterans Project

Great info and updates for our vets from RVP!

Contact Belle Landau with any questions.

From: Belle Landau [mailto:Belle@returningveterans.org]
Subject: Veterans Day events

Good Morning Kevin,

Here are the activities that the Returning Veterans Project is sponsoring or participating in, on Veterans Day:

  • At 7am that day I am speaking to the Oakgrove Kiwanis Club.
  • Throughout the day, multiple restaurants in the Portland Metro area are participating in our 4th Annual Chow Down For Vets fundraiser. (A complete list of participating restaurants will be up on our website by the end of next week.)
  • We’re partnering with the Trail Blazers that evening, at their annual Military Appreciation Night Game. We’ll have an information table and our one minute video will be shown on the JumboTron just after the Oregon National Guard swearing in ceremony. We will know tomorrow if we still have any Blazer tickets left to sell.

If she has tickets left to sell, she will let us know?!

Two November/December outreach activities:

  • During the month of November, Capital Pacific Bank in the Fox Tower will display a poster about our organization in their ATM window!
  • Returning Veterans Project will again be one of the charities in the 2014 Willamette Week Give!Guide which begins on November 5th and ends on December 31st. (Last year this effort raised over $10,000 to support our free, confidential counseling and somatic services for OEF/OIF/OND veterans, service members and their family members in Oregon and SW Washington.)

Thanks so much and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like more information.

Best,

Belle

Jon Sanford, a Co-founding Advisory Board Member with the USO Portland, will provide us with an update on the Portland USO and what’s on the horizon.

Jon will share both of these incredible projects with us. He is a Disabled Combat Veteran and was the Veterans and Defense Advocate for US Senator Ron Wyden for the last four years; Jon’s advocacy for returning soldiers of our military is quite admirable. His stories and updates will surely reflect his personal commitment!

Onaway 5k, supporting VetREST

My Friends,

Saturday’s Onaway 5k, supporting VetREST was a huge success!  Beautiful weather kicked in with a motivated group of runners and volunteers to make for a spectacular inaugural event.  Congratulations to Dan and his team on the great achievement.

A special thank you to our society members who supported me, helping me to raise over $1,125 to support our veterans in need.  There are a lot more across the Society who can give; it’s not too late…

Here’s how to support VetREST:

CPT(R) Kevin J. Byrne
4390 SW Parkview Ave
Portland, OR 97225

VetREST permanent link: http://wpsor.org/?page_id=266

As far as how the 5k went for me, I took 3rd place in the 40-yr men’s grouping!  Thanks for MG(R) Curt Loop for pacing me….and thank you for only 2 other 40-yr old men running!

Here’s my favorite shot of the day, taken right after the race.  I like to call it “Running with the stars!”  MG(R) Curt Loop, MG Dan York, BG Steve Beach, and ‘junior’ CPT(R) Kevin Byrne.

To Dan, Mark, and all the family/friends working the Onaway 5k supporting VetREST…..thank you!  I can’t wait for next year!

May Luncheon: Veteran Suicide Prevention

My Friends,

As we draw near the end of our luncheon series before the summer break, we have a great May event scheduled for our Society.

Monireh Moghadam is a clinical social worker with the Portland VA Medical Center.  She will join us to talk about her role as a Suicide Prevention Coordinator and the much needed VA Program for Suicide Prevention.  Please come to learn more about this critical topic that has come to the forefront of veteran mental health issues, how we all can identify a Veteran that may be at risk for suicide, and what they can do when we identify a Veteran at risk.

About our speaker:

Monireh earned her Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of California, Los Angeles. She spent the next twelve years working in various mental health settings, including jail mental health services, the California state hospital system, and emergency department psychiatry before relocating to Portland, OR in 2009. Monireh continued her work in emergency psychiatric services before joining the Portland VA in early 2012, where she has since worked as one of the Suicide Prevention Coordinators. Monireh is licensed as a clinical social worker in both Oregon and California, the latter which she retains in the unlikely event the sun summons her back down south.

Please join us if you are in the Portland area on the 21st:

1) Date: Wednesday, 21 May
2) Location: The Old Spaghetti Factory, 715 SW Bancroft St., Portland (off MacAdam Blvd just south of the Aerial Tram)
3) Time: 11:45 AM
4) Lunch is $15 for all

For planning purposes, please RSVP me if you can attend. A quick email reply is fine. As always, your guests and friends are always welcome to join us.
